DOCTORAL DISSERTATIONBiodiversity and Phytogeography of Bolivia's Wetland Flora |
Notes on Converting the DissertationI wrote my dissertation using WordPerfect, and the majority of the images were in "landscape" layout. Because of the thesis formatting specifications at my school (the University of New Hampshire), which required that each image be on a single page and that each page be numbered on the "bottom" (i.e., the lefthand side of a landscape page), it was easiest to have most images as a separate file. Meeting these formatting requirements resulted in the dissertation being spread among ~ 50 different files. The first step in converting the dissertation to pdf format was to incorporate all the "pieces" into a single MS Word file. I did away with all "landscaped" images, and incorporated images into the text (i.e., each image was no longer on its own page). In this way, the dissertation was reduced in length from the original 410 pages to 335 pages. Hence, there is no longer a direct correspondence between pagination in the original dissertation and the "electronic version." I also took the opportunity to redo the formatting on many of the figures (most of which were originally in black and white). However, I resisted the urge to revise any text (although, I did fix two mis-spellings). Because of the large size of the document, I've "rebroken" the dissertation into a series of Chapters and Appendices. Please let me know if you have problems with any of the files, or if you encounter any glaring errors in formatting. - Nur Ritter |
